John Tonelli scores a career-high five goals in a 6-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Nassau Coliseum. Tonelli is one of two Islanders (Bryan Trottier, twice) to score five goals in a game.

Bossy Scores 50 in 50
Mike Bossy becomes the second player in NHL history to score 50 goals in 50 games when he nets two against the Quebec Nordiques at Nassau Coliseum. Bossy scores both goals with under five minutes to play in the third period.

Isles Win second Stanley Cup
The Islanders win their second Stanley Cup, defeating the Minnesota North Stars four games to one. Butch Goring wins the Conn Smythe Trophy with his 20 points (10G, 10A), including two game-winning goals, through 15 playoff games.

In the 1980s, startup Etak pioneered digital mapping and GPS systems. In the 90s, they released FoxTrax, an augmented reality system that helped hockey fans follow a puck’s quick movements across the ice by illuminating it during broadcast coverage. Stanley Honey, the founder of Etak, went on to co-found sports and events streaming startup SportVision.

The Islanders skate to their 15th straight victory after beating the Colorado Rockies 3-2 at Nassau Coliseum. The 15-game winning streak sets a then-NHL record and runs from Jan. 21 – Feb. 20, 1982. The Islanders score 97 goals over that span while only allowing 37. The streak comes down to the wire, with John Tonelli scoring the winner in the final minute of the 15th game.

The Islanders beat the Montreal Canadiens in six games to win their 19th straight playoff series. It is still an NHL record.

Bryan Trottier becomes the first Islander to record 1,000 points, scoring a pair of goals in a 4-4 tie against the Minnesota North Stars. Trottier reached 1,000 points in 726 games with 374 goals and 626 assists – becoming the 19th player in league history to the mark.

bossy scores 500th goal
Mike Bossy scores his 500th goal in the final minute against the Boston Bruins at Nassau Coliseum. Bossy becomes the 11th NHL player to score 500 and does it in only 647 games, the fastest of any player at that time. It’s still third-fastest in NHL history.

It takes four overtimes, but the Islanders beat the Washington Capitals in Game Seven of the 1987 Patrick Division Semifinal. Pat LaFontaine ends the game at 8:47 of the fourth OT period, wrapping up at 1:58AM on Easter Sunday. Kelly Hrudey makes 73 saves.
