Osgood sets starts record

Chris Osgood makes his 66th appearance of the season in a season-closing victory over Philadelphia, setting a new franchise record for goalie games. Osgood’s 66 games surpass Ron Hextall’s franchise record of 65 in a season, set in 1993-94.

Peca wins selke trophy

Michael Peca wins the Frank J. Selke Trophy, given to the league’s best defensive forward. Peca tallies a career-high 60 points (25G, 35A) in the 2001-02 season, his first as an Islander and as team captain. He’s the first Islander to win the award.

The Islanders defeat the New York Rangers 3-2 at Madison Square Garden for their first shootout win in franchise history. Tied 2-2 at the end of the third period, Rick DiPietro turns away all three Rangers shooters and Miroslav Satan scores the Islanders’ first-ever shootout goal.

Al Arbour comes out of retirement to coach his 1,500th game with the Islanders. The Islanders give Arbour his 740th win, as they rally out of a 0-2 hole to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2. A banner commemorating his 1,500 games coached is raised to the rafters.
