    June 8, 1972

    Bob Nystrom is drafted to the Islanders original draft class in 1972. Nystrom debuts in the first year, but his first full season with the team comes in 1973-74 where he tallies 41 points and becomes a fan favorite for his ability and toughness.

    May 24, 1980

    Nystrom scores the most famous goal in Isles history, netting the Stanley Cup clincher at 7:11 of overtime in Game 6 in the 1980 Final vs Philadelphia. Nystrom redirects a John Tonelli pass to deliver the Isles their first of four Stanley Cups.

    Apr. 5, 1986

    Nystrom suits up for his 900th and final NHL game with the Islanders. After suffering a career-ending eye injury with 899 career games, Al Arbour sends Nystrom out for one shift in the final game of the regular season to hit the milestone.

    The Islanders begin presenting the Bob Nystrom Award, given to the player on the team "who best exemplifies leadership, hustle, and dedication." The award is named in honor of Nystrom, affectionately known as “Mr. Islander.”

    Apr. 1, 1995

    Nystrom’s number 23 is retired by the Islanders. Nystrom’s banner hangs from the rafters, acknowledging his pivotal role on the Islanders. Twenty-three is the fourth number to be retired by the franchise.
