The Islanders acquire Butch Goring from Los Angeles for Bill Harris and Dave Lewis. Known as the final piece of the Islanders puzzle, Goring filled the role as the No. 2 center, helping the Isles win four-straight Stanley Cup Championships.

Goring scores his 300th career goal in a 6-3 loss against the Boston Bruins. Denis Potvin shoots the puck from the point and Bob Nystrom hits the post with the rebound, but Goring is on hand to tap in the goal.

Goring wins the Conn Smythe Trophy, given to “the most valuable player for his team in the playoffs.” Goring had 10 goals and 10 assists in the 1981 playoffs, earning him both the trophy, and a key role in the Islanders second Stanley Cup.

MSG Networks hires Goring as the Islanders color commentator on the team’s television broadcasts. After finding success on Hockey Night Live, Goring is hired by the Islanders to work in the booth as the team’s color commentator.

Goring’s number 91 is raised to the rafter, as Goring becomes the eighth player in Islanders history to earn such an honor. It was raised as an acknowledgement of his contributions to the team as a player, coach and broadcaster.
